Body Waist Union Suits (Trenton, NJ, Evening Times, 14 Apr 1922, p. 32)

Body Waist Union Suits (Trenton, NJ, Evening Times, 14 Apr 1922, p. 32)
During the 1920s (before air-conditioning) teenage children, both boys and girls, tried to cut down on the layers of underwear they had to wear. The underwear manufacturers therefore came up with an abbreviated waist union suit–a knit garment that had very brief legs in "trunk style" and was cut in "athletic style" to be sleeveless or have very short sleeves. It nevertheless had to provide for the attachment of supporters for long stockings which boys still wore with knickers or short pants on formal occasions as required by the conventions of "decency." These briefer-cut knitted union suits were worn mostly by younger children of twelve or less, but some teenage girls and boys also wore them as attested by this ad for "Body Waist Union Suits" which were form-fitting but covered only the torso and the abdomen. These waist union suits were later called "shortie" union suits.
